I hate FTP

I've been taking a break from poker, but decided to play tonight for a while. This is the reason why I think FT has it out for me.

Shortcut that led to the long road again...

Since I was running well for a few days, I decided to indulge myself and take a shot playing 50nl. My bankroll dictates that I shouldn't be playing any higher than 10nl, but like Jensen, I was getting a little bored playing at the level I was at.

Throughout the course of the weekend, I dropped just over four buy-ins, leaving my bankroll below $150. The sessions went alright for the most part, just couldn't really get anything going. I paid off a number of hands where my reads were shaky, but I think I made the right decisions even if I ended up losing the hands. The losses hurt, but if I were properly rolled for the level, I wouldn't have thought twice about it. Generally, four buy-ins is nothing and I would keep playing, but being as short as I was, I decided to take the prudent route and drop back down to 25nl.

It's hard to make any real conclusions about the shot at 50nl. The tables I played seemed to be looser than most I've played at 25nl. The players were slightly more aggressive. I think I made some good adjustments to the tables and played steady poker, although I was playing a bit tighter than normal due to a lack of cards and also knowing that one or two bad hands could seriously affect my bankroll.

That last statement is the one that is important. The fact that I know that the stakes were affecting my play is a sign that I shouldn't have taken the shot. There is nothing wrong with playing tight. I'm willing to play like a nit when I have to, and have won games that way, but if you aren't willing to make some calls based on your reads because you're afraid to lose, you're in the wrong game.

That being said, I'm going to be at 25nl for a while longer till I can at least get to $500 before taking another shot at 50nl. Tried to take a shortcut, but it always seems that shortcuts lead back to the long road... :)

I decided to take a night off and play some pool with friends. Will be back to the grind tonight.

other shoe gonna drop?

Played another short session and ended up just over two buy-ins.  I've been really tired recently while I'm playing.  Borrowed a page from Jensen and made sure that I stopped while I was ahead.  Major difference I've seen in my play recently is that I haven't been making the thin calls and plays I was making before.   I know that I'm probably leaving money on the table, but it's really affect the volatility.  I may start opening up again when I feel a little more comfortable with my bankroll.

Cards have been runing good for a couple of days which makes me wonder if I've just been on a mild heater and if the days of losses are just waiting around the corner.  I'm still not liking my stats, but that's a work in progress.  I still think I still need to make a couple of PF adjustments.

19.4 vpip (this is around where I expect to be)
11.2 pfr ( a little low)

Quick Update

Just finished a quick session. Things were a little rough starting, but the cards cooperated when I needed them to. I didn't lose any huge hands, but there were a ton of small hands I didn't get away from. I played a lot tighter but a lot more aggressive than normal playing about 15.2/8/6 for the session. Things at work have been kind of hectic so I wanted to get back into the habit of updating right after the session so that this is a little more regular.

Here's one hand that is bothering me, though. The player was playing fairly tight. I think I made the right decision, but I still wanted to make this call.

weekend update

Haven't really had much to talk about recently. Played Wednesday and Thursday dropping about 1 1/2 buy-ins. The weekend's sessions went fairly well and I actually ended up gaining ground instead of dropping 3-4 buy-ins like I normally do. I was hitting a fair amount of hands and getting paid off. I also feel like I did a better job of keeping pots smaller with my marginal holdings and a better job of getting away from TPGK, TPTK which are hands I've been way overplaying recently.
In honor of my friend, Jensen, here is a hand that really set this guy on my table off. He had me all the way, but the poker gods were kind.

I read this hand right and decided to gamble, but wasn't rewarded. It's the luck of the draw, right?

This last hand, I'm wondering if I could have extracted more value after flopping the boat. I was really hoping my opponent was drawing to the flush which would have almost guaranteed a stack off. Do you think I could have extracted more value without the guy folding?

Bleeding chips

Looks like I'm still having problems with my HEM stats. My export doesn't show last night's session. Played a two hour session last night and lost just over one buy in. Lot of decent starting hands, stole a lot of blinds, but didn't connect with any of my bigger hands. Oh, unless we want to talk about getting screwed with KK on a 3, 8, J rainbow board. There was a maniac on the table who just kept pushing. Was going to look him up a hand before with AQs, but got the KK the next hand. The guy pushed with KQh and ended up catching runner-runner for his flush. Two hands later, he jumped off the table.

Kind of pissed me off, but it didn't set me on tilt which is an improvement. Playing 3-4 tables, it's so easy to be down a buy-in just playing the hands I'm supposed to be playing. I'd like to have a day or two with solid results just to boost my confidence. I don't think I'm playing that badly, and I reviewed my hand selections for the past several sessions.

I'm playing a little more out of position than I should, but the hands have been mostly strong. I do need to drop the speculative hands, though. In position, I've been playing a whole bunch of stuff that I need to really narrow. I guess that's something to work on over the next several days.

bad night

Lost close to a buy in tonight. Played a fairly long session that went back and forth. I had one big hand where I made a bad decision with AK after I flopped TPTK.

I just couldn't really connect with anything and was bleeding chips playing rather aggressively. I couldn't really recover from the hand above. Not much to say other than that.

Changed computers, lost information, decent weekend

I didn't play a whole lot this weekend, but still put in a decent number of hands. Problem is that I really can't tell what my specific stats are. I changed computers this past Saturday. I've been able to get HEM running, but I've had some trouble loading the past data from my old computer. It kind of sucked yesterday playing against guys I know I've played before and not having stats on them.

The good news is that for the first time in a long time I ended the weekend in the black instead of dropping three to four buy-ins. There were a couple of hands I wanted to post, but my HUD shut off half way through the session. I need to work on my play against more aggressive players. I know that I should be willing to call down with thinner holdings, but I just have a hard time doing it.

All in all, though, I'm fairly happy with my play this weekend.

lackluster night again

Tried playing a deep stack table in addition to two normal tables last night. The cards just weren't cooperating and I just keep leaking chips on all of the tables. I had a number of monster draws, but nothing hit. Thing that sucks is that my oppenents had hands each time.

All in all, I'm fairly happy with my play last night. There a couple of hands that I got stubborn and didn't want to let go of what I was sure was a loser. Oh, and a hand where I doubled someone up with set vs. over-set which caused me to ultimately have a losing session, but like I said, all in all, it wasn't bad considering what I was being dealt.

I ended up dropping $10.20 overall. I've updated the totals, but will have to look for the actual session stats.

glad to get out of that one

played a pretty long sesson and I'm just lucky that I was able to walk away with a small win.  Cards really weren't cooperating and I was down for most of the session.  There were just a whole bunch of hands that I got inolved with that turned out the wrong way and I was having a hard time getting people off hands.  I was down almost two and a half buy-ins for the night but connected with two or three big hands.  Like I said, I was just happy to walk away with a small win.

Uneventful Evening

Don't have my full results here to update, but last night was an uneventful night playing. Overall, I ended up dropping 1 buy-in. I got it in on a flopped set against a guy with top pair and the nut flush draw. Needless to say the guy got there.

Had a bunch of small wins on three of the tables which kept me afloat. More to come.

should have quit earlier

Ended with a winning session last night. Was up a bit more, but bled chips away as I got tired. All in all, though I'm happy with how I played and I'm happy that I was able to bring the table I got stacked on back to almost even. Was up almost two buy-ins at one point, but ended up just over one.

Just got hit with a huge cooler. I'm posting now before I lose the hand history and hopefully, this keeps me off tilt. The other three tables have been going well so far, and I thought this was going to be my chance to double up on this table.

updating went down the tubes this week

so much for regular updates.  I've been playing, but not a whole bunch of hands.  Looking at my session stats, my longest session was last night 553 hands played.

I've had a few losing sessions this past week, but nothing more than 1/2 a buy in after the dismal day playing on Labor day where I lost $44.45.  Booked winning sessions the past three nights for just over $90 or so.  I have to grab the stats off my laptop so I can finally update my ytd numbers.  Hopefully I'll get to that after work this afternoon.

Time to possibly quit

I forgot to export and e-mail myself this weekend's results. Thanks to the help of a buddy of mine, we had a winning session on Saturday afternoon, but I had some extremely rough sessions on Sunday and last night. I'll update the totals a little later tonight. I won a whole bunch of little pots, but the deck was against me any time I had anything big. The frustration led to tilt, and we all know where that goes. Here's a couple of hands from last night which I think I didn't take enough into account.

I should have raised more pre-flop but I still couldn't see someone calling a raise with an 8 in early position unless they had a pair of 8s. The board was draw heavy, but I was the aggressor again a guy who was short and got caught betting straight into his set. I felt I may have been up against a large draw rather than the set.

Here's a hand that kind of set me off, but the guy had me all the way. I just played the TPTK way too aggressively at the flop, but it's still going to go all-in on the turn when the ace falls.

And of course, what would this be without at lease one bad beat replay. My other table was doing well, but I had just gotten stacked with the AK a few hands before on my second table. Serves me right for slow playing the aces, but I really don't think that I would have pushed the guy off his 10's with a 3-bet preflop. After this happened, I decided to call it a night.

Took a Break

I normally wouldn't post something if I took the night off, but since I've been so bad at keeping this blog up, I thought I would just to keep me in the habit of posting. Things at work have been a little hectic recently and I ended up not playing at all last night. On a side note, The Usual Suspects is a great movie.

Right read, wrong results

I took a night off on Tuesday to go and hang out with some friends, but played a shorter session last night that was going well, but ended up in a loss. I played just under two hours with some pretty big swings along the way. I was up for most of the session except for a hand that I should have folded and one where I made the right choice but ended up on the short end of the stick. I'm pretty sure I could have gotten on the positive side, but decided to quit and play another day when I wasn't so tired.

Here's the first hand. Overplayed the aces and probably should have just dropped it on the turn, but the call was only $7 more into a $30 pot. The guy was mixing it up and had shown down both extremely strong hands as well as a few busted hands, playing about 25/18/3. He was willing to bet his draws and I had seen him get stacked trying to make a move. Maybe the better play was making a probe bet on the turn and letting it go, but I don't think that extracts full value if the person had been playing KK, the other AA (unlikely), the flush draw or straight draws. I would be way behind the Q, 66, & 33, but I made the call.

I just ran a Pokerstove calculation. Based on this guy's preflop range, I show as having 81% equity on the turn.

I was able to climb back a little, but the hand that made me decide to just call it a night was this one.

Anyway, overall stats for the night:

daily update

I should have just added this to the last post, but the spreadsheet file didn't get through until just a little while ago. It was a normal session but a really volatile one. Started down about a total of a buy-in across two tables, but started to catch some hands and was up. Ended up losing a $30 pot with QQ against some guy who thought calling a raise with 5-8 off was a good play. Got it in on a dry flop where the guy flopped a five. The eight fell on the river. What are you going to do. I watched him play like a maniac for the next 40 minutes, but could never catch a hand against him.

I'll post a few other hands where I made some questionable calls which added to the roller coaster ride that I played. Luckily, I ended up with a small winning session for the night.

been really bad with updating this

Well, it's been over a week since I've updated this blog. I've been playing, but haven't been updating. The days have been up and down. More down than up. I know that I've been making some bad decisions, but looking at the totals, over the past nine days I'm down just over 4 buy ins which is really not much, but I still feel like I'm getting killed. A lot of times, I'm down $12 or $13 without even knowing it just playing a few hands. Anyway, I e-mailed myself my daily session stats for the past nine days so I'll be posting that here and updating my stats.

Tuesday & Wednesday

Played just under 3 hours on Tuesday night. All in all, it went pretty well until I made some fairly bad decisions where I was pretty sure I was beat. I pushed over the top with top and bottom pair plus a flush draw against what ended up being top two, and I lost another big pot with an overpair to a flopped set. Although I was happy with my play for the most part, by the end of it, I had turned what should have been a small winning session into a $29.00 loss. I've been playing tighter over the past several sessions and it's kept me out of a ton of marginal spots.

Last night I felt that I was finally able to gain some traction, gaining 4 buy-ins for the day. Cards came when I needed them & I was lucky enough to have some huge starting hands against a couple of guys who were willing to push their short stacks with ace-rag. My kings and queens held up both times and I was able to walk away with my first positive night in a long time.

I really need to work on tilt control and following my instincts. Starting off this exercise winning the majority of the time put me in a bad mindset where I felt I could just play aggressive all the time and end up ahead. I really have to keep my mind on the basics of positional awareness and only selected aggression. I run in to all kinds of problems when I'm just freewheeling. uneventful night

Things started out bad last night dropping a buy-in and a half in about 30 minuted. I decided to take a break for dinner. I really wasn't sure if I was going to play another session or not. I was able to win back the buy-in and end only down 4.35 for the day. A loss, but definitely not what I've been seeing of the past week or so.

I'm happy with the way I played and most of the decisions I made other than when I pushed over the top with KK into AA.

Time to rethink things

I've kind of been putting this off as I've been thinking about whether or not I should even be playing. The continued downswing just keeps getting worse. Bad thing is that I know that I've been tilting when I start losing and when I'm getting frustrated. That being said, here we go. My weekend total is -140.45. My stats are where they have normally been, but I've been making some really bad decisions.

I'm really kind of sick about things. I'll be more diligent about posting here. Oh, and my effective bankroll is a little smaller than the $80 someodd that's posted. I played a $6 turbo sit n go as well as a $10 tournament this weekend as well. Needless to say I didn't cash in either.

Back to the drawing board

I should have never thought that the other day's small win was a sign that things were getting better. I have in 4 days, managed to lose what it's taken me almost 2 weeks to build up. I'm kind of sick about that. I three tabled last night and was up on one table and even on the second. The last table, however, I kept losing a number of smallish pots, and three huge pots. I got it in on the turn with a set holding KK and lost to a made straight. Bet top two into a straight and called the all-in bet because I just didn't think the guy would be playing 7-4 with a raise and reraise in front preflop.

And those are just the hands where I don't think my plays were all that bone headed. I know that I was leaking chips all night on that table trying to make something happen with my strong hands, but I just wasn't connecting on most of them. My c-bets got no respect and I would have to fold the turn a lot of times.

Stop the bleeding

It took a marathon session last night, but I was finally able pull out a winning session. At the worst, I was down about a two and a half buy-ins and thought it was going to be another night where I took a beating.

The swings were kind of big last night with me being up nearly a buy-in early then dropping one as tables kept breaking and I didn't have a feel for who I was playing with. I was final able to hold off my tendency to bleed even more chips when I'm frustrated with not catching hands, but still did end up tilting for a while about 3 hours into the session.

We'll take the win, though. +6 is better than -65

WTF am I doing

Sorry I don't have the stats right now. I'll post it when I get home. Played a session just under three hours last night. Was happy with the play for the most part and it looked like I would squeak out a small winning session after continuously hopping tables due to tables breaking after only about 15 minutes, but got involved in a hand that I shouldn't have that put me down about a buy-in for the evening. More on that later.

For the most part, I did a good job of not getting frustrated when hands weren't coming except for the stupid play at the end of the night, where I was getting anxious and just decided to play the hand really aggressively.

Doubled up once and won a couple of other big pots earlier which meant that I was down more than I thought jumping from table to table. $5 here and there adds up.

Still frustrated that I can't keep things under control for the entire session. Concentrating on hand selections and position helped last night. Tonight's focus is to continue what I did last night and add pot control.

The Downward Spiral Continues

Dropped two buy ins tonight and I have no one to blame for it but myself.

-------------

UPDATE

I looked over my hand histories over the past two days to see what's going on. Although my stats have remained fairly constant, I've been played a lot more marginal starting hands over the past two days and have played them over aggressively trying to push the table around.

I've generally shown down crap in the past two nights. The difference is that over the past several weeks, I'm showing down near the nuts most of the time which allows me to play much more aggressively since I'm getting more respect at the table. I know I haven't been taking table image into account and I haven't been paying as much attention as I should to flop texture when I'm c-betting.

Basically, I've just been playing like an idiot. Overly aggressive on the flop and overly passive post, just check calling with marginal hands, not forcing people to define their hands and just hoping that I'll hit something, which makes me the sucker at the table.

I'm not sure if I'm going to play tonight, but it's time to go back to basics. I need to remember, STARTING HANDS, POSITION, and CONTROLLED aggression instead of just playing like a fish.

Should have just left it alone

Decided to play another session last night and it was a bloodbath. Everything went downhill after I got stacked with AA vs. AQ. The first queen fell on the flop . Everything ended up going in there as my opponent had been having a rather bad run of cards and was playing aggresive. He ended up rivering the set.

For the next two and a half hours, I just couldn't hit anything. When I did, I was outkicked or played passively and let my opponent get there. I was playing looser than I should have been and I think that although I wasn't tilting like I used to, I was definitely on tilt after losing wiht the aces and not being able to catch any cards.

Let's hope things get better tonight or the next time I play.

Sunday Update

Played a fairly long 3-table session. I think I should have quit a little earlier, but still ended up in the positive. I let a couple of hands get there, but I didn't have an idea of whether my hand was good or not to be playing more aggressive. All in all, no huge hands. I got away from two that could have been disastrous. Looks like a lot of my tough hands today were due to not just letting go of my blinds and floating cards when I had a small part of the flop. Anyway, here are the results.

Played a quick session this evening. Things were going well for the most part and I'm happy with my play. Lost a couple of pots but nothing huge. Played some pool last night

Yet another day off. Decided to go and hit some balls at Brian's with my friend Jensen so I have no update for poker.

I would however like to talk about how things at the pool hall have gone downhill since I used to hang out there a couple of years ago. I grabbed a table, but when I got there, I realized that half the table lights were out which made the table really dark near the foot of the table. I went to the front desk to let them know about the problem and to ask them if they could take a look at the lights.

After about 20 minutes, a couple of the security guards went to another table with some new lights. I went to ask them if they could look at our table first since we were actually playing on the table. They said they would be right over, but an hour later, no one had come to look at the lights. We eventually moved tables, but no one ever went to look at the lights on our original table and that just irritated me.

I guess I was upset because this was a perfect example of how the pool hall has gone downhill over the past few years. It's a pool hall dammit, the lighting on the table makes a huge difference. Maintenance of the equipment should be a top priority, but instead, I felt like everyone I talked to didn't understand what I was talking about or why I thought it was such a big deal. Them acting like they didn't care pissed me off even more.

Something like this would never have happened with previous management. They understood that making sure that the tables were in good shape was a top priority. I guess I'm just not used to seeing the pool hall in the kind of shape that it's in now. It makes me sad that it seems like no one cares. I used to spend a lot of time at the pool hall in the past and I hate to see it going to crap.

6-max

Was down about a buy in two tabling full ring earlier, so I 2ecided to 3 table short handed. I guess part of the reason I chose to switch to short handed is that my HUD looks so jacked up when I play full ring. Maybe I'll post a picture of it in the near future.

It was a fairly long session. I started up down a buy-in, but cards cooperated when I needed them to and it looks like i'm going to end up winning a little if I don't do something monumentally stupid in the next couple of hands.

I bought a hell of a lot of $.35 pots tonight. While it does kill action, I think the important thing is getting the lead in the hand the times when you do have a caller. Crappy thing is that like Jensen said, 85% of the time, everyone folds.

Short Handed Play

Decided to change things up a bit and played short handed yesterday afternoon. Nothing really exciting happened, but the dynamics of the game were faster than I was used to.

I've generally been apprehensive playing shorthanded. I really think that the way I used to play was really not good for it. Well, it wasn't a good way to play in general. My discomfort in changing my game to be more aggressive was magnified by playing short handed.

I actually think that my game right now is a bit too aggressive with my session AF hitting 4 or greater at times which just begs for people to slow play me. I also know that I'm still looking at too many hands in and out of position which are getting me into trouble when I catch a part of the flop with a less than marginal hand and I'm too stubborn to let it go when there's action.

Saturday Update

Played only a short session on Friday that ended up 1.25.

Played two sessions yesterday, morning and evening, at a net loss, but still nothing major. I still think that I played alright, and again, I'm happy that I didn't end up tilting one or two stacks away after what I felt were one or two brutal beats.

I don't have th stats for Friday, but here are yesterdays

Adding the third

Decided to try something different tonight and added a third table. It was a pretty interesting experience. Was up on one table while being down on the other two, then took a hit on that table but looks like I'll end up being positive on the other two.

No really interesting hands to talk about. I had a pretty even distribution of cards. All three tables were kind of tight and I couldn't get callers when I had big starting hands. I used to limp a lot with big starting hands to try to trap, but I've tried to stop doing that since my opponents always seem to hit their hands when I'm not making them pay to see the flop.

I'm just going to play a few more hands before I call it a night. Will post results in a bit.

Grinding it out

I haven't looked at the stats yet, but that was one really long session. Started out down almost a full buy-in thanks to a combination of coolers and my own stupidity. I've held in, and it looks like I'm going to squeak a small winning session. I'll update the numbers just as soon as I log off.

Ok, just posted the numbers and that was a damn long session. I'm proud of myself for not imploding when I was down in the first hour or so. I think what helped was playing topped off when I was down 20bb. My overall stats for the session weren't the greatest. Played more like a nit tonight, but sometimes you just have to find a way to make it work, especially when the cards aren't cooperating.

Not having rakeback sucks. I paid more in rake tonight than I ended up winning.

Let the roller coaster begin

It had to start at some point. I played a really short session today but managed to stack off twice in a little over an hour. Playing a 6-max and full ring table at the same time is probably not a really good idea. In either event, these were the two largest hands of the night that sent me packing.

I stacked off with ATx when I made the nut flush on the turn to some guy who slow played KK and had turned a boat when the board paired with the same card that gave me the nut flush. It's my fault for checking my flush hoping to check raise. If I had bet out, I would have been raised, but I'm really not sure that I would have ever thought that the guy was that strong. Then again, the guy was 10/3 so I should have thought that he probably wouldn't have called the pre-flop raise without some type of hand.

I stacked off on the short handed table with QQ to some guy who was playing 76s and hit three of a kind when the flop came 664. All in all, it was a pretty uneventful night. I need to ask FT grinder what he's using for that hand replayer.

Running well

I've actually been running pretty well the past couple of days or so. I've been hitting a lot of hands and I've been coming up on the winning side of my flips. The adjustment to a slightly more aggressive playing style has seemed to work as well. FT Grinder and I were talking about it, and while this style may work, it's probably going to lead to fairly high variance. Not as much as playing like a LAG, but I guess only time will tell.

I'm just about done with my current session so I'll be updating the info in my stats section.

Day's results:
231 mins
342 hands

Nothing spectacular here, but I'll take it.

Downward Spiral?

I've been inspired to put this together after talking with a friend about keeping an online log of our poker playing. I agree it's a good way to keep track of my progress. I've never been good sticking to a particular level or trying to exercise any degree of proper bankroll management. Maybe keeping this blog will help. My main goal right now is to rework my game and to keep a true picture of what is going on while I'm making the changes.

I will be playing .10/.25 nlhe for the moment with a starting bankroll of just under $250. It's going to take a while to move up, being that I'm under-rolled to even be playing 25nl, but here's to hoping that I'll keep running good for a while and the changes I'm making improve my game for the better.

Then again, this whole exercise could just prove that I shouldn't be playing in the first place. lol.

I thought I would try this for a while...

I thought I would give blogging a try since one of my friends has been keeping a blog of his recent poker adventure. A couple of my other friends have regular and semi-regular blogs here as well. I'm not too sure what type of blog this will end up being, but I'm sure that it will contain a fair amount about poker and probably a few other things that have been going on recently.

With that in mind, let's start with the other since I still have to pull some numbers for the poker side of things and I'm trying to figure out what my challenge to myself is going to be. I just got back from a weekend in Maui with friends. We headed out there for the First Annual Four Skins Golf Trip. We played Wailea Gold and Kapalua Plantation. There are a number of good players in our group. I am definitely not one of them, so it was a long two days over on Maui.

Ok, that's it for now.
